Ray-O-Vac workers, Madison, 1944
Arthur M. Vinje photographed “service wives” Emma Perry, Frances Sturdy and Amanda Singer at work at the Ray-O-Vac battery plant in Madison, Wisconsin. The image was published in the December 24, 1944 issue of the Wisconsin State Journal. The original caption emphasized that their work was patriotic service:

Out at Ray-O-Vac, these three women, each with their men at war, work that a world wide conflict may be kept from the shores of a country which observes Christmas in a near-normal manner.
