Wrought iron “Masterpiece,” Cyril Colnik, Munich, 1891-1893.
This large and elaborate grille was metalworker Cyril Colnik’s “Masterpiece,” the showcase of metalworking techniques an apprentice was required to execute in order to be elevated to the ranks of master craftsman. Colnik completed this work at the age of 22 while a student at the Industrial Art School of Munich. His skill secured him a position as an assistant for the German metalwork exhibition at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Following the Fair, Colnik chose to remain in the United States, settling permanently in Milwaukee.
