The Pettersen family in front of their home, Lodi, Columbia County, Wisconsin, ca. 1870. Photo by Andreas Larsen Dahl.
Andreas Larsen Dahl, born in Norway in 1844, built a career as an itinerant photographer working in south-central Wisconsin in the 1870s. Dahl captured striking portraits of Wisconsin farm families—many his fellow Norwegian immigrants. He often posed his subjects in front of their homes, surrounded by furniture and other possessions, to illustrate their success in America. In this image of the Pettersen family, a wagon with two horses has been pulled up near the house for inclusion in the photograph.
