Little Girls with Flower Bouquets, ca. 1883
Nine-year-old Ada James of Richland Center (back row, second from left) grew up to be a leader of the women’s suffrage movement in Wisconsin. A year before this photo was taken, her mother Laura James hosted the first meeting of the first women’s suffrage organization in the state.
In 1924, the Milwaukee Journal recalled the secrecy surrounding this landmark meeting:

“It was decided not to incorporate the word ‘suffrage’ into the name as yet. Instead they organized under the time honored title of ‘women’s club.’ Surely this would not offend the most prejudiced husband.”
