Farmers Institute, March 1910, on Washington Street in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. Though the street scene has changed considerably, Schroeder’s Department Store and St. John’s Lutheran Church are still running strong in 2012.
Our guest curator this week is Jeff Dawson, director of the Lester Public Library in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. Using historic photos created by local resident Hubert R. Wentorf in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, combined with his own photography skills, Jeff has created a series of ‘then and now’ scenarios on the streets of Two Rivers. The ‘now’ photos were all taken on July 30, 2012.

Our guest curator this week is Jeff Dawson, director of the Lester Public Library in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. In 2010, the library received a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant to digitize the Hubert R. Wentorf historic photograph collection. Utilizing this collection and his own photography skills, Jeff has created a series of ‘then and now’ scenarios. The ‘now’ photos were all taken on July 30, 2012.
This first image shows the Waverly Hotel under construction in 1893. Today the Waverly name is still used for this popular restaurant/bar.

Hamilton Manufacturing Company band, Two Rivers, Wisconsin, 1923.
Most late 19th and early 20th century communities were home to at least one organized brass and wind ensemble sponsored by a military group, university, high school, fraternal organization, or even a local business. As the Kalamazoo Public Library puts it, “To say that military and brass bands were popular during the 19th century is like saying the Beatles were popular during the 1960s.” Formal photographs of these bands are often visually striking, with musicians in matching uniforms lined up in rows, gazing directly at the camera.
