Women and men posing at Rohn’s Swimming School, Milwaukee.
Wisconsin may not be know for its sandy beaches, but swimming is still a favorite summer pastime here. This mixed group of bathers at Rohn’s Swimming School look to be having a grand time on the banks of the Milwaukee River. Julius W. Rohn, a Bohemian immigrant, established the school in 1856 at the area of deep water in the river above the North Avenue dam. Thousands of Milwaukeeans learned to swim at this popular spot.
