Bernard “Bunny” Berigan and Donald Berigan, Fox Lake A young Bernard Berigan in Fox Lake with his brother Donald and dogs Tubby and Rover. Bernard grew up to become Bunny Berigan, a renowned jazz trumpeter who performed with Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Gene Krupa, and other greats of the big band era. A year before this photo was taken, her mother Laura James hosted the first meeting of the first women’s suffrage organization in the state. In 1924, the Milwaukee Journal recalled the secrecy surrounding this landmark meeting: “It was decided not to incorporate the word ‘suffrage’ into the name as yet.
